Resouce Gathering Information

One thing that you can do early on to help yourself grow is gather resources.  In addition to resources resource tiles can also yield materials, cores, and pieces.  I have included a chart below that outlines the materials you can find on different tiles.  But even in gathering resources there are some important things to consider that will help you out.
First in foremost is to be smart.  Never, never, never gather while offline, unless you have a resource shield active.  Many players get a sick joy out of hitting players on tiles to kill their troops, so you will want to make sure if you are not shielded you can pull your troops fast enough.
Second, it is generally not advised to gather with your hero.  This is a good way to lose your hero.  While there is Prospectors and other gear that can help you gather faster I would recommend only using this if you are shielded or have researched Gathering March increase and have increased march to protect your troops and are still watching very very closely on your hero.
Third, send more troops than needed.  It is speculated that the more troops you send the greater the chance you have of finding materials.
Lastly, apply a gathering boost.  This boost will allow you to gather your resources faster and it is speculated that this will help to increase your chances of finding materials.

Protecting Yourself

One of the first and most important things you need to learn in Game of War is that you must protect yourself at all times. This is a game that is based on having war, so even in times of “peace” there is always a risk of somebody attacking you. You will need to be mindful of protecting your troops, hero, and resources.

Never leave yourself unprotected for any extent of time, because more than likely there is somebody out there that will be more than happy to kill your troops or capture your hero for you.

A couple things to note is that at Stronghold levels 1-10 your hero cannot be captured, from 10-14 your hero cannot be executed, and at 15+ if your hero is captured it can be executed. In addition, always be aware of how many resources you are holding and how much your Storehouse will protect. Big players are always looking for free resources so you don’t want to become their farm.

There are several ways to protect your yourself in Game of War.

Shields:
There are several types of shields you can get that offer protection for a set amount of time. This is the preferred method for most players. The two I recommend using most often are the 24 hour and 3 day shields. While these will normally cost you gold (you can sometimes get 24 hour shields through gifts) they are the best to use for keeping your city safe.

While you can get 8 hour shields cheaper in the Alliance Store there is a risk that something will come up before you can get back on to shield.  I only suggest using these if you only need to shield temporarily, such as during a KvK kill event.  I would never use an 8 hour shield when going to sleep.

There are also resource and dig site shields. You can get this through packs that you buy form MZ. They will protect your troops on a resource (not gold) or dig tile. A resource shield will last for the full time it takes to gather the resources. A dig site will last for 3 days. If your dig is longer than that you will need to activate another shield at the end of the 3 days.

If you do not plan on attacking, scouting, or reinforcing for more than 24 hours I recommend using a 3 day shield. These cost 2,500 gold while a 24 hour cost 1,000; so it is 500 gold cheaper to just use a 3 day shield then 3, 24 hour shields.

There are two other shields that you may have and rarely use: a 7 day and a 30 day.  7 Days are only available in certain packs that you can buy from MZ for real money.  30 days are expensive 45,000 gold to buy.  It is cheaper to just buy several 3 days and reapply them so you would only want to buy one of these if you know you will not be able to get on for an extended time and can’t reapply other shields.

Tips:
If you need to shield and you are short on gold never hesitate to ask your alliance members for help.  Many will be more than happy to trade or give you a shield.

Always use 24 hour or 3 days shields during a KvK kill event. Do not run the risk of your 8 hour expiring before you can get back on.

Pros: Your hero, troops and resources are safe from attack for the duration of the shield
Cons: costs gold to use

Ghost or Fake Rallies:
Another way to protect yourself is to do a fake rally. A fake rally is when you set an 8 hour rally on a target and rally your troops and hero. When your troops and hero are rallied they cannot be hurt if your city is attacked. This is a free way to protect your troops and hero without shielding.

Please note that a fake rally does not protect your city resources. Your Storehouse is what protects your resources up to a certain point, so if you are fake rallying be sure not to have too much above your Storehouse level or your city will still invite being hit.
Another important thing is that while you can cancel a rally at any time before it marches and you get your troops back once it marches you would have to use a march recall item to get it back if your troops and hero start their march.  So, be sure to cancel before the end of the timer.

This is really useful early in the game when you don’t have a lot of troops and resources.  If you can rally all your troops and hero this is a great way to protect them at no cost.
You can also extend your time by letting your rally actually march.  For example, you want to make sure you're protected in case you oversleep (sleep for 9 hours) you can set an 8 hour rally on a target that has at least a 30 minute march you will have 8 hours of rally time + 30 minute march time to target + 30 minute march time back = 9 hours. March through the forest and use siege troops to make the march even longer.

Tips:
If you have more troops than your current march capacity will allow you can ask if your shielded alliance members will allow you to stash your extra troops in their Embassy. Please note that if the alliance members resets their shield your troops will return home.

If this is something you will be doing regularly you may want to setup bookmarks at various distances and name them for the distances. For example, rally 10 hours, rally 12 hours. If you are set up close to the wonder forest you can also use this to extend time as marches through the forest are slower.

Once you get big enough to capture heroes and you would like to try to hold a hero for execution this is a way to protect your troops while you are waiting for the hero’s time to come up. You can protect your troops while holding in case somebody decides to hit you while you are holding. Just be forewarned that you will always be holding at your own risk.

Pros: free way to protect your troops for extended periods of times
Cons: does not protect your resources, can commit your troops and hero when you may need them

General Tips:
Set a timer on your phone. Whenever you set a ghost rally or shield set a timer to go off at least 15 minutes before it is set to end. This will help you to remember that you need to go reset your protection.  While there is life outside of Game of War other players won’t care.  If they see you unprotected they will use that chance to attack you, so protect your investments.

In my opinion shields are always better.  I prefer to have my fellow alliance members shielded over fake rallied. The reason for this is that it helps deter unwanted attention on the hive. This is especially true during a KvK kill event. If somebody is looking for a hive to hit and yours is completely shielded they will pass you over. If they see somebody unshielded, they don’t know if that person is fake rallied or not so they will port in and attack. So shielding not only protects you, it protect your alliance members as well.

Never, Never, Never leave your troops gathering unattended, unless you have a resource/dig shield up. There are players that get a certain kick out of killing troops on tiles so they will go around and hit troops on a tile. If you are gathering, be sure you do it during a time when you can be online to pull your troops within seconds.

Never, Never, Never gather with your hero. This is the easiest way to lose your hero and I have captured many a hero just by hitting tiles during KvK Kill Events. The only reason you should have your hero on a tile is if you have prospectors gear and you are trying to gather resources fast and only do this with a resource shield.

What anybody can do during a Kill Event

During a KvK Kill Events (KvK KE) regardless of your Stronghold size, your power, or your troop count you can help the kingdom and alliance be successful.

Protect yourself

The number one thing is protect yourself.  The point of a kill event is to kill troops and/or traps so don't let yours get killed.  The best way is to keep yourself shielded with a 24 hour or 3 day shield.  While 8 hours are cheaper you never know when real life is going to happen and keep you from getting back on to reset your shied.  I only recommend using this if you are actually attacking and you need to shield temporary during the event.

The same is true with fake/ghost rallies.  I generally don't recommend a fake/ghost rally during a Kill Event. The reason for this because outlanders don't know that you are rallied, so all they will see is an unshielded city.  This will invite them to come to the hive to hit you.  It is never a good idea to bring unwanted attention to the hive.

Also always remember outlanders can stay for 4 hours after the event, so you will need to remember they don't leave right away.

Kill monsters

Monster killing is another great way to help during a KvK KE.

It is good to kill monsters in both kingdoms as you get points in the outlanders kingdom for each hit and kill and if you stay home for every monster you kill you keep the outlanders from getting points.

You will also get the alliance gifts for the monster kills.

What I recommend is to form a few groups to kill monsters in the outlanders kingdom or in yours. By grouping up you can team up on higher level monsters to kill them faster. You will be able to get more points by hitting and killing the highest level monsters you can.  So stock up on energy, wings (to keep outlanders from poaching yours and for poaching theirs), and monster attack boosts.

You will also want to set your monster skill points to where you can get the most out of each hit.  You don't need to worry about energy recovery as it will not do you any good.  You will need to hit monsters must faster then it will recover.

Also STAY SHIELDED.

Scout

During the KvK people that are attacking are always looking for targets if you are on during the KvK KE scouting our kingdom and outlander kingdom for targets is very helpful. During the event the main alliances will be out hitting targets.   During the event there will be a place for reporting what you find, so check with your alliance on what the process is for them.

The big hitters will generally be looking for 1-2 Billion power players in the outlander kingdom (more likely to be offline) to rally and medium hitters will be looking for small hives with unshielded players, or 400 million to 1.2 billion power levels to rally and 40 - 100 million for solo hits.

When you report a player please use all three cords k:x:y with the ":" so that people can click on them and go straight to the target.  It is very important to use all three as the first number is the kingdom and people will be jumping from kingdom to kingdom and will need that coordinate to be able to the coordinate in the right kingdom.

Also report the players power level and if they are holding hero. For example 537:169:473 8 mill holding (if the player is holding heroes).

For more information on reading a players profile when scouting please check out my post on this here.

Help with Rallies

Even if you are not able to actually commit troops to a rally you can still help members that are.

The number one thing is to keep chat clear of idle banter so the players that are fighting can communicate with each other without having Alliance Chat full of other stuff.

  • Help watch for your teammates.  When players are rallying they may be in and out of the map screen so if you can help watch them and let them know if enemies are porting in, setting rallies on them, or attacking this can help keep everybody up to date on what is happening during the rally.
  • Help watch enemy heroes. Along with watching for what is happening.  It can be helpful to watch enemy heroes for the fighters.  If a player is getting rallied/soloed help by checking what the hero has equipped.  It will be especially helpful to call out if a hero has cores or full sets (that provide set bonuses) equipped.
    • This information will be key for traps accounts so that they will be able to know if they can  take the hit or not.
    • Also note that during battles smart players will switch hero gear and many will time it for right before they attack.  Never just assume what they have started with is what they plan on hitting with.
      • Cores will have flames in the bottom of the item.
      • Full sets will make the hero "glow".  They hero will have yellow rays coming out of it.
  • Help speed troops to the rally leader. You can help other players that are sending troops by using your wings to speed their troops.  When players sending troops to the rally leader you can go into the Hall of War and click on the green speed button and speed their troops for them.  This will help them get their troops to the rally leader faster and allow them to focus on other things in the heat of battle.

How to read a player's profile prior to attacking

When going out and attacking or scouting for others in your alliance reading a players profile can tell you a lot about a player. There are 4 items (Stronghold Level, Power, Troops Hospitalized, and Alliance Helps) that you can just spot check the player help you determine some key information.

Some of this information will allow you to know if you can hit the player without event scouting them. This is very helpful in catching players while they do not have their shields up. If you scout them you will give them a chance to shield. When I was smaller I was able to just use this information to determine if I was going to hit a players Stronghold or tile during Kingdom versus Kingdom Kill Events without scouting first. This is especially useful if tile hitting, as scouting will allow them to pull the troops before hitting them.
Stronghold Level
The Stronghold level will help to determine what types of troops they may have.
Strongholds of at least level 8 will have up to T2 Troops.
Strongholds of at least level 15 will have up to T3 Troops.
Level 21 may have T4s but it will depend on their power level, if they are below 100 million they will most likely not have T4s.
Power
This can help you know if you can solo hit the player or not.  If the power is below 40-50 million depending on your power this player should be able to be hit by yourself (depending on your strength).  Once you are looking to hit 40-50 million you need to start checking for trap accounts.
If a player is over 100 million they will most likely have T4 troops so you will need to be careful with these.
Troops Hospitalized
Another item to check is the number of troops they have had hospitalized.  If this number is very large and if they also have a large number of kills the account is most likely a trap account.  Traps accounts have high, low tier, troop counts and lots of hospitals. When you hit a trap you will only hospitalize their troops while they kill yours.
Alliance Helps
This tracks how many times the player has hit help for their alliance members.  If you check the number, wait a bit, and check again and it hasn't increased there is a good chance the player is not online; if it has then they are online and will most likely be paying attention to what is going on. Be careful of trap accounts as a good trapper will hold of from hitting help to make it look like they are not online.

For more information on Traps Inside Game of War has a great write up on them.

VIP Prestige - Look before you jump

Once you have reached regular VIP level 10 do not go straight to VIP Prestige.

At Regular VIP 10 you get the bonus (more quests) Daily, Alliance, and VIP quests, but when you go to VIP Prestige 1 you start over with no Daily and Alliance Quests and your instant construction drops to 12 minutes.

Once you hit level 10 you will want to save your VIP points until you get enough to go straight to VIP Prestige Level 8 or 9.  At level 8 and 9 the bonuses you get are fairly comparable to what you have at Regular VIP 10.

For Level 9 you need 274,000 VIP points.

You will also need a VIP token that cost 10,000 Gold to get.

For more information on VIP and VIP prestige you can view this article.

Using Upkeep Reduction to Run a Positive Food City

When setting up your city what you build for your resources is something that needs to be considered.  There are two types of set ups that are general recommended for your resources.  The first is a 0 food income city where you specialized in one of the other type of resources.  I explain this type in another blog post.  The other that is using upkeep reduction gear and items to run a positive food city.

With it addition of upkeep reduction equipment (list included below) you can now field a large army and still have positive food income.  Without these items there is not a way to field the types of army needed to compete and have a positive food income.

Once you can craft an item that has upkeep reduction you can look to start setting up one of these cities.  An example of one of the items is the Firelords Helm that offers a Upkeep Reduction of 75% and Food Production of 300%.  (This is the helm I currently have)  I also currently only have 1 level 21 Farm and almost 4 million Troops (mostly T4).  When I  activate a 50% upkeep reduction boost I am able to get my food in the positive.

My City Stats for Food production:

2059% Food Production; 5,181,600/hour
City Capacity is 27,125,000

  • The number of farms I have are 12 level 19 and 8 Level 20 and 2 level 21 (working to get these to all level 21)
  • I have the Hell Vent Helm that offers 62% reduction, so I have to run 50% upkeep reduction.
  • I also run 25% Food Production increase.
  • I have my hero Food Productions and Resource Production maxed with skill points.
  • For gear I currently have all Gold:
    • Rabbit Armor with level 4 Luck Gem (151% food production)
    • 2 Icarus Wings with 1 level 2 Luck Gem (250% & 252%)
    • Boulder Boots with a level 2 Luck Gem (102%)
    • Sickle with Level 4 Luck Gem (156%)
    • 1 Chalice with Level 2 Luck Gem (127%) (working on another Icarus wing)
    • Hell Vent Helm (62% upkeep reduction)
  • VIP level 11+38,400
  • Research Bonus +211,200
Please note there are other items especially in Magistrate Set Gear that offer better boosts.  This is what I can currently craft.  As I get better gear I will update.

Once you decided this is the route you want to go you will want to set your city up with farms (with one of each other resource for city upgrade purposes).

Tip:
If you have done so, be sure to take this time to build 10 of each resource building, just to level one, so that you can get the quests for them. After you build 10 of one just destroy all but one and move on with your actual city building

The hardest thing with this set up will be to craft the equipment that has the upkeep reduction. Most of these items are part sets and require hard to find items.  Many of the hard to find items are found in packs that you purchase, so if you are not planning on spending a lot of money on the game I would recommend going with the 0 food income city I referenced above.

Also, many players may need to start with the 0 food income city and then covert to a positive when they get or know they will be getting a item that provides the upkeep reduction.

List of Equipment that offers Upkeep Reduction:

Executioners Headsack
Blacksmith Goggles
Slayers Charge
Shoguns Elite Kabuto
Hermes Winged Flight
Kunoichis Deceit
Savagers Discovery
Generals Helm
Firelords Helm
Prospectors Helf
Magister Headress
Phoenix Beak Helm
Hell Vent Helm
Helm of Fire
Flame Crested Warhelm
Nikes Wreath
